The Best Whipped Mashed Potatoes

My nightmares consist of lumpy mashed potatoes. Kidding…totally..kidding… If you are looking for the dreamiest, creamiest mashed potatoes, look no further! I learned the key to the best mashed potatoes, and it involves melting your butter, and heating up your milk before adding them to the potatoes.

You can always add sour cream, or cream cheese to make these extra decadent. I will add this depending on the dish I am serving them with. If my dinner includes gravy, I will usually omit the sour cream, but if you want these to really shine feel free to add that to your liking. I think I could eat an entire bowl of these as a meal, they are that good!

These pair perfectly with one of my favorite weeknight meals, check out my Creamy Artichoke Chicken!

Why You Should Make Whipped Mashed Potatoes

  • Easy. Let the stand mixer do all of the work for you!
  • A staple. Knowing a good mashed potato recipe will take you far my friend!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Yukon Gold Potatoes – I find these to be the creamiest, velvetiest potatoes.
  • Milk/Half and Half – to stream in and whip the potatoes.
  • Salted Butter – a whole stick, we aren’t playing around here!
  • Garlic – A mashed potato isn’t the same without garlic in my opinion.
  • Salt and Pepper – to taste!

Whipped Mashed Potato Tips

  • Thanks to Ms. Brenda Gantt for the tip about heating the milk and butter. This makes a world of difference!
  • Use Tony’s Cajun seasoning instead of salt, this is what I always do and it turns out amazing.

How To Make The Best Whipped Mashed Potatoes

  1. Peel. First, peel all your potatoes. After they are peeled, I like to cut mine into 2-inch chunks. You want your pieces to be the same size, so they cook uniformly. Place your potatoes and cover them in water. I don’t measure the water; I just eyeball it until I know all potatoes are covered and none are peeking over the surface of the water.
  2. Boil. Place pot on the stove over high heat and bring to a boil. Boil potatoes for 15-20 minutes until fork tender, stirring occasionally.
  3. Strain. Next, strain the potatoes over the sink, and place potatoes into your Kitchen Aid mixing bowl. This can also be done with a hand mixer if you do not have a stand mixer.
  4. Whip. Add the whisk attachment to your stand mixer. Mix the potatoes on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until they are completely smooth until you add anything to them. We want these hot potatoes nice and whipped! Next, melt your stick of butter. Melt it right before you add it so the butter is hot when it is added. Turn on the mixer and stream the butter in slowly. Make sure to scrape the sides of your bowl as you go to make sure everything is mixed in. Do the same thing with your half and half. Heat the half and half for 20-30 seconds in the microwave until hot and stream this in as well. Next, add in the garlic and salt and pepper to taste. If you like sour cream in your mashed potatoes, add that in at this point!
  5. Serve. Serve immediately topped with chives. Enjoy!
